BLACK CERAMICS FOR BALLISTIC PROTECTION OF AIRCRAFTS
LIGHTWEIGHT – PERFORMANCE – FLEXIBILITY
Optimum ballistic protection of helicopters and aircrafts is key for safe and successful deployment.
Since back in the sixties ESK’s hot pressed boron carbide (B4C) has been used for the ballistic protection of helicopter seats. Whenever weight is the critical factor, boron carbide is the material of choice. Starting in 2012 ESK’s portfolio includes complex panels in boron carbide.
Besides boron carbide, mainly in recent years, sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) has also been used more frequently in helicopters and planes. Sintered silicon carbide can offer an attractive and economic alternative to boron carbide, especially for very complex geometries or lower ballistic protection levels.
