BORONID® BORON NITRIDE POWDER, PRECURSOR, CUBIC BORON NITRIDE

BORONID® BORON NITRIDE POWDER AS PRECURSOR FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CUBIC BORON NITRIDE (cBN)

BORONID®, boron nitride powder, from ESK has a proven track record over years as a precursor for the production of cubic boron nitride (cBN), which has been commercially available since the end of the 1960s. It is produced from the hexagonal modification at a high pressure of over 6000 MPa and temperatures of over 1500 °C. The transformation takes place by the same mechanisms used for synthesis of industrial diamonds from graphite. Cubic boron nitride with a hardness of 4700 MPa, is currently the second hardest substance known, after diamond.

Properties

In many grinding applications, cubic boron nitride is even preferable to diamond, since it is stable in air up to temperatures of 1400 °C. Diamond, by comparison, begins to decompose at about 800 °C. Another, very important property of cBN is its chemical resistance to ferrous materials. As a result, cubic boron nitride has become established particularly in the market for rough and fine machining of tool steel and a wide range of nickel and cobalt-based superalloys.
