CERAMIC BALLISTIC ARMOR FOR AIRCRAFT
Reliable but weight-minimized ballistic armor is also a crucial factor in the operational success of aircraft such as helicopter and airplanes.
Boron carbide (B4C) has been used since the 1960s for protecting pilots' seats in helicopters. Besides boron carbide, silicon carbide (SiC) has also been used in helicopters and planes in recent years. Silicon carbide can offer an attractive and economic alternative to boron carbide for very complex geometries or low ballistic protection levels.
