BORON CARBIDE (B4C), CALCIUM HEXABORIDE (CaB6) AND ZIRCONIUM DIBORIDE (ZrB2) POWDERS AS ANTIOXIDANTS FOR REFRACTORY COMPOSITIONS
The steel industry predominantly uses carbon-containing bricks and compositions, and their service life is an important issue. The limiting factor here is particularly the oxidation of carbon, which occurs rapidly at temperatures >1500°C. Antioxidants are therefore important for improving lifetimes. Compared to conventional metal antioxidants, ceramic antioxidants from ESK offer special protection, particularly against very aggressive alloys.
ESK offers the following antioxidants:
- TETRABOR® boron carbide antioxidant
TETRABOR® boron carbide (B4C) has a proven track record particularly for use in Al2O3-C slide gates and various isostatically pressed parts and compositions. TETRABOR® can be supplied in various grain sizes.
- Calcium hexaboride antioxidant
Calcium hexaboride (CaB6) is particularly used with unfired MgO-C bricks. The standard grain size is 400 mesh
- Zirconium diboride antioxidant
Zirconiumdiboride (ZrB2) additionally improves the corrosion resistance when used in ZrO2-C compositions in submerged nozzles and shroud tubes. The standard grain size is 400 mesh
